Speed vs. Substance: Advisors Navigate a Changing Valuation Market

On a recent morning in Houston, a business advisor sat across from a longtime client who had a familiar question:

“What’s my business worth?”

The client was considering retirement. The advisor paused.

A free online calculator could generate an answer in seconds. A full professional valuation could take days or weeks. Somewhere between those two options sits one of the growing challenges facing business advisors today: how to provide a valuation that is quick enough to move the conversation forward, but credible enough to protect both the client relationship and the advisor’s reputation.

That tension is becoming increasingly common across the valuation industry.

Business brokers, accountants, wealth advisors, and exit planners are fielding more valuation questions as aging business owners begin exploring succession planning, acquisitions, financing opportunities, and potential exits. At the same time, the market has become crowded with automated calculators, AI-generated summaries, generic rule-of-thumb multiples, and software platforms promising instant answers.

Many of those tools can produce fast results. Fewer produce confidence.

Advisors say one of the biggest risks with low-cost valuation tools is that they can unintentionally commoditize the advisor themselves. When reports appear overly simplistic or fail to hold up under scrutiny, clients may begin questioning the quality of the advice surrounding them.

Yet many advisors also acknowledge that not every business owner asking for a valuation requires a full professional appraisal immediately. In many cases, owners simply want an informed starting point — a realistic understanding of value before investing significant time, money, or emotional energy into a transaction.

That middle ground is where a growing number of firms are beginning to focus their attention.

The Solution

BizWorth, a Houston-based business valuation firm, plans to launch BizWorth Express in August 2026, a platform designed to help advisors provide faster valuation insights while maintaining a more professional presentation and workflow than many low-cost alternatives currently on the market.

“As a certified appraiser, I saw too many advisors forced to choose between slow, expensive professional valuations or quick tools that lacked credibility,” said Shelia Darby, CPA, CVA, and Co-Founder of BizWorth. “We designed BizWorth Express to help advisors respond more quickly without sacrificing professionalism, brand quality, or the ability to scale into more complex valuation engagements when needed.”

The platform is expected to allow advisors to generate branded valuation summaries for early-stage conversations involving seller expectations, SBA pre-screening, buyer qualification, annual valuation reviews, and exit planning discussions.

But industry professionals are quick to point out that not every business situation remains simple for long.

As deals evolve, additional complexity often emerges: multiple ownership entities, significant financial adjustments, real estate considerations, estate planning issues, lender scrutiny, or legal disputes. In those situations, a more comprehensive professional valuation becomes necessary.

Rather than viewing technology and professional valuations as competing approaches, many advisors increasingly see them as complementary tools serving different stages of the client relationship.

The broader shift underway across the advisory industry is not necessarily about replacing valuation professionals. Instead, it reflects growing pressure to respond faster, communicate more clearly, and handle a rising volume of valuation-related conversations more efficiently.

Clients still want quick answers. They also want confidence that those answers are grounded in credible analysis.

The advisors gaining traction in today’s market are often the ones learning how to balance both.
